God’s ministry of saving and appointing for service. Examples from Paul, from Eve and from the wayward overseers of Ephesus, by Bruce C. E. Fleming May 29, 2024
Paul said of himself that he was the chief of sinners. But he was also a second-degree sinner in that he acted ignorantly and in unbelief. Do you doubt God’s grace that in righteous mercy God accepted his confession to the Lord and appointed him an apostle, the human author of much of the New Testament? (Acts 9:5, 1 Timothy 1:12-16).
The writer of Genesis said that Eve ate the fruit because of three good reasons: she saw it was good for food, it was a delight to the eyes and it was desirable to make one wise. (Genesis 3:6). Do you doubt God’s grace that in righteous mercy God accepted her confession that she had been deceived and ate and that God then confirmed her as the enemy of the being who spoke through the serpent and appointed her to the ministry of being the mother of the promised Offspring? (Genesis 3:13-16, John 8:44).
Paul instructed Timothy to teach the wayward overseers under his care, including the men and women who had gone astray? Do you doubt God’s grace that in righteous mercy God reckoned them like Paul and like Eve in that they were second-degree sinners and worthy to have their desire granted to serve faithfully in the future? (1 Timothy 1:3, 2:8, 11, 13-14 and 3:1).
