In the first of two linchpins in the extended passage of Genesis 2-3, in Genesis 2:8, two words make up the linchpin. Each is linked to corresponding words in verses 7 and 9.
The diagram shows how the initial word of verse 8 – “planted” – points down to verse 9, especially to the first word, while the last word in verse 8 – “formed” – points back to verse 7, especially to the first word.
