When Eve realized she had been deceived she followed the serpent tempter’s word no longer. Dramatically she denounced him before God and labeled the serpent tempter for what he was, her deceiver. Later Jesus would call him the Father of Lies. We know him as Satan.

God built on her words in Genesis 3:14-16 and confirmed the conflict between her and the enemy. Speaking prophetically God revealed there would be conflict between Satan and her Offspring.

When did that happen? It happened on Good Friday. Jesus was wrongly condemned and nailed on a cross. There he gave up his life and from there he was hastily buried.

On Easter morning he rose from the grave! On Good Friday Jesus had not been bruised in an eternal defeat. He had only been severely bruised on the heel so to speak. But his death on the cross for the sins of others – for us – marked defeat for the one who has attacked us since the Garden.

God’s words in Genesis 3:15-16a were the first announcement of the Gospel. The Good News was not contained only in God’s words to the serpent but also in God’s words to the woman as God confirmed to her that she surely would have conception!

This is clearly translated by the NKJV in 3:16a. Sadly, many other translations muddle God’s words. They cover over this confirmation of the Gospel and make it look like God imposed something like a curse instead of a blessing on the woman in Eden and all her daughters.

God told the woman in the Garden of Eden the Good News that she would conceive and that her offspring would crush the head of the serpent tempter (Genesis 3:15-16a). God’s angels spoke to the women at the empty tomb of Jesus on Easter Sunday giving them news of the fulfillment of this Edenic prophecy (Luke 24:1-10).

If Jesus had not risen from the dead he would have been the one who was crushed. But by conquering death a crushing defeat was turned into a crushing victory!
